Is there a template letter outlining the sex education content in Life to the Full?
Overview
There is not a specific template letter that focuses solely on the sex education elements of Life to the Full. However, there are a range of parent consultation resources available that can be adapted to support clear communication with families.
Is there a letter specifically for sex education content?
At present, we do not provide a standalone template letter dedicated only to the sex education aspects of the programme.
Instead:
- Sex education content is identified within the programme as Key Decision areas
- These areas are clearly signposted so schools can make informed choices and communicate appropriately with parents
What are Key Decision areas?
Key Decisions are:
- Areas of content that sit outside the statutory RHE curriculum
- Included because schools may feel they are important for pupils’ understanding and safeguarding
These include topics such as:
- Talking about sex
- Talking about pornography
- FGM
- Protected characteristics
Full guidance on these areas can be found in the Programme Coordinator Manual:

What resources can schools use to communicate with parents?
We provide a number of adaptable resources to support parent consultation:
1. Parent Consultation Tool
Available on the website, this includes:
- Draft letters
- Communication templates
- A Parent Information Booklet
These can be adapted to reflect your school’s approach and highlight specific content where needed.
2. Online Parent Portal
The Parent Portal allows parents to:
- View programme content directly
- Watch lesson videos in full
- Understand how topics are taught in an age-appropriate way
It also includes:
- Conversation starters to support discussions at home
3. Engaging Parents guidance
Additional guidance is available on:
- How to communicate effectively with parents
- Approaches to consultation
- Supporting understanding of sensitive topics
Can parents view the full programme?
Yes—in some cases.
Where helpful, schools can request temporary access (typically 3 weeks) for a parent to view the full programme.
This can:
- Provide reassurance
- Support transparency
- Help address specific concerns
Recommended approach
Rather than using a separate letter focused only on sex education, we suggest:
- Using the Parent Consultation Tool as a foundation
- Highlighting relevant Key Decision areas where appropriate
- Directing parents to the Parent Portal to see content in full
This helps ensure communication is:
- Clear and accurate
- Contextualised within the full programme
- Supportive and reassuring
Summary
- There is no standalone template letter for sex education content
- Key Decision areas highlight non-statutory content clearly
- Schools can use and adapt parent consultation templates
- The Parent Portal is a key tool for transparency and engagement
